Our oval city stickers are based on the european white oval car bumper stickers used in Europe in the mid 20th century.  Since european drivers often drove from country to country and the size and shape of european license plates were similar, these oval country stickers were required by the UN (United Nations) around 1949. These oval bumper stickers were designed to help quickly identify a vehicles registration country of origin. The stickers included two or three letter country codes and sometimes included the country flag and/or seal.

These stickers were never a requirement in the United States but, in the mid-1980’s, they had become a trendy souvenir item. Many tourists began collecting these oval stickers with the names of cities and states they have visited. This souvenir trend continues to this day.
